Today I want to talk about a law that can change the way you approach your studies, your work, and even your household chores. Meet Parkinson’s Law: “Work fills all the time it is given“.

What is Parkinson’s Law?

This law, named after the British historian and writer Cyril Northcote Parkinson, may seem a bit paradoxical, but at the same time it reflects a lot of life situations.

The essence of Parkinson’s Law is very simple: work expands to fill the time allotted to it. That is, if you are given two weeks to complete a task, you will automatically extend it by two weeks, even if you could actually complete it in a few days.

How does it work in life?

Example 1: studying.

You have two weeks to study for an exam. The first week you relax and think you have plenty of time. The second week, you panic and try to cram all the material into your head in a few days. Bottom line: stress and sleep deprivation. And if you had spread the preparation out evenly, you could have avoided all-night textbook marathons.

Example 2: work.

Your boss has given you a month to deliver a report. You feel relaxed and spend the first two weeks doing small tasks or, frankly, procrastinating. Then, a week before the deadline, the real fever starts. It’s stress and sleepless nights again.

Example 3: household chores.

You have to clean your apartment before your guests arrive in three days. The first two days you put off cleaning and do other things. Only on the last day do you start the general cleaning. In the end, you are tired and did not have time to do everything you had planned.

How do you outsmart Parkinson’s Law?

  1. Focus on results, not time.
    Set a specific goal and do not move on to the next one until you have achieved it.
  2. Break tasks into parts.
    A large task can seem overwhelming. Break it down into smaller steps and do them one at a time.
  3. Use a timer.
    The Pomodoro Method is a great way to combat Parkinson’s Law. Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. This helps you stay focused and not get distracted.
  4. Create artificial deadlines.
    If your work or studies allow, set deadlines ahead of real deadlines. This will help you avoid last-minute panic.
  5. Give yourself time to relax.
    This will help you avoid burning out or overworking yourself. A planner can help with this.
